The Properties and Functions of Polysorbate 20

Polysorbate 20, also known as polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate is sythesized by ethoxylation of sorbitan with the addition of lauric acid. It has a molecular formula of C₅₈H₁₁₄O₂₆. At room temperature, it is a light-yellow viscous liquid. 

Polysorbate 20 is a type of hydrophilic nonionic surfactant that has numerous functions and polysorbate 20 uses can be found in food, cosmetic, pharamaceutical and industry.

Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate can act as a surfactant in essence and lipid soluble vitamin formulations. It can also form oil-in-water emulsions to stabilize active pharmaceutical ingredients. Depending on specific industrial and product requirements, different grades of polysorbate 20 can be offered.
